One of the three horrific accidents that happened on KZN roads over the weekend claimed four family members of deputy minister transport minister Sindisiwe Chikunga.
The deputy minister lost his son, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren in a head-on collision on the N11 outside Ladysmith on Sunday, 17 July.
According to the statement by her department, Chikunga was expected to arrive in KZN today to identify the remains of the family and establish facts.
“Further details about the accident will be released once full information is established from local authorities. The family is pleading for space and privacy before further communication with the public,” read the statement.
ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said on Sunday night, two adults and two children were killed, and another man left seriously injured, when a sedan and bakkie collided.
Emergency personnel arrived on the scene after 9 pm and found provincial EMS already in attendance.
“Paramedics found that the light motor vehicle smashed against the roadside barrier. One person was trapped inside while three others were lying beside the car. Four people were declared dead at the scene,” said Meiring.
The accident happened a day after the province witnessed two horrific accidents that claimed 17 lives.
On Saturday night, 11 people died in an accident involving a taxi on R617 near Howick. And earlier that day, six people died on the N11 towards Newcastle when three cars collided, where one of them caught alight.
