Cable theft behind eThekwini water cuts

A former contractor is suspected to be behind cable theft that’s affecting water supply in the City of eThekwini. Umkomaas police intercepted a truck transporting brand new cables, worth an estimated R2-million.

It is believed the stolen cables are being supplied to other municipalities in the country while sabotaging eThekwini’s service delivery.

Two suspects have appeared in court, and more arrests are expected.

“Part of the reasons why there are problems with the water supply is because of the failure to supply electricity to the pump stations. It is also caused by load shedding and cable theft,” said chairperson of eThekwini’s Human Settlements and Infrastructure Committee, councillor Thanduxolo Sabelo.

The case has been handed over to the Hawks for further investigation.
