Macpherson: Public Works & DBE working together to eradicate pit toilets once and for all

The Public Works Department has identified over 3,000 schools with pit toilets in its eradication campaign.

Minister Dean Macpherson said his department was working with counterparts in education to remove pit latrines at schools.

The Basic Education Department, under Angie Motshekga, previously made a commitment that pit toilets would be a thing of the past by 2025.

The use of pit latrines is prevalent in provinces including the Eastern Cape, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and parts of the Northern Cape.

“The work that organizations like Breadline Africa does, particularly in the space of eradicating pit toilets, is actually what inspired the Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube and myself to work together, with organisations like that and similar to that, to make sure that we eradicate pit toilets once and for all,” said Macpherson.
