Update: 7 people treated for smoke inhalation after Engen refinery fire

Seven people are being treated for smoke inhalation in hospital following an explosion at an Engen refinery in Durban.

KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services officer, Robert McKenzie says the cause of the blast is not yet known.

“The exact cause of the fire or explosion is not known at this stage. We do know that after 7 am this morning there was an explosion at the refinery resulting in a fire and big smoke which rose quite high,” he said.

Flats across the road from the refinery are reportedly being evacuated.

Emergency services are on the scene.
