2024 SONA: South Africa energy crisis set to be key focus point for Ramaphosa

The country’s energy crisis is set to be a key focus area for President Cyril Ramaphosa when he delivers the State of the Nation Address on Thursday.

And while the severity of load shedding has decreased in recent months, 2023 was still the worst year of blackouts on record.

Some political analysts believe he will want to justify his appointment of an electricity minister, which he announced during last year’s State of the Nation Address, and show that the move has yielded positive results.

Senior political lecturer at the University of Pretoria, Heather Thuynsma: “I think he’s also going to laud the development of the energy action plan, which echoes the need to develop a reliable and more sustainable energy supply. I would be surprised if he didn’t tout the fact that agreements to source renewable energy have also be signed.”
