Elon Musk mocks Microsoft Word

Tesla and X owner Elon Musk mocked Microsoft Word’s Inclusiveness feature claiming the feature “scolds” users for not using words deemed inclusive.

Musk shared a screenshot on his X accounts that showed Microsoft Word’s inclusivity feature suggesting replacing the word “insane” due to its perceived mental health bias. The inclusivity feature promotes the usage of inclusive language but can be turned off in the settings for those who do not wish to use it.

Musk’s dig at the feature underlines his stance on the balance between linguistic inclusivity and individual freedom of expression. The incident sparks discussions on the fine line between encouraging inclusive language and the potential pitfalls of language policing.

Musk’s comment adds to the ongoing conversation in the tech industry about the role of AI in language and potential unintended consequences. The Perspective tool “highlights potentially confusing numbers in documents,” according to Microsoft.

Word then “offers perspective phrases that are simple to comprehend and can be inserted inline to aid individuals in understanding what they’re writing or reading.”
