Kaizer Motaung relives Ellis Park disaster
Sunday marks 20 years since the Ellis Park disaster, which left a mark on local football.
Described as the country’s worst sporting accident, it took place during a match between soccer giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in 2001.
A total of 43 supporters were killed in a stampede.
According to reports at the time, the stadium was packed to its 60,000 capacity but a further 30,000 people tried to make their way in.
The tragedy had major implications in terms of crowd control and safety at stadiums.
Chiefs chairman Kaizer Motaung recalled that night of horror.
“It is very sad that beautiful day turned out to be a very sad day for some of the families because there were many people who died,” he said.
“Those of us who were there will always remember this day because it can never be removed from our memories.”
