EFF Demands Resignation of Finance Minister Godongwana After VAT Hike Ruling

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are calling for the immediate resignation of Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana following a court ruling that suspended the recent value-added tax (VAT) increase.

On Sunday, the Western Cape High Court delivered a significant blow to the National Treasury by setting aside the fiscal framework and declaring the VAT adjustment invalid. The EFF, alongside the Democratic Alliance (DA), had challenged the legality of the fiscal process used to adopt the VAT increase, arguing that it was procedurally flawed.

EFF Leader Speaks

Speaking at a media briefing in Johannesburg, EFF leader Julius Malema said the court’s decision highlights Godongwana’s failure in office.

“If he had any decency, he would resign after this,” Malema stated. “They have lost the confidence of the South African people, and the business community should no longer trust them. Businesses spent billions adapting their systems for a VAT change that has now been nullified—they should seek accountability from this government by any means necessary.”

The court ruling marks a major setback for the Treasury and raises further questions about the government’s fiscal planning and public engagement processes.
