The Council for Higher Education says the attack on the black Stellenbosch University student goes way beyond the physical. In a viral video a white student can be seen urinating on the desk of a black student after breaking into his room. The Council says the white student intended to completely demean and dehumanise his victim.
The organisation further says the act forced the victim to question his legitimate right to study at the public university.
It says the student’s wellbeing will be affected and the incident could negatively impact his academic performance ahead of exams.
The Council says the university must take the strongest action possible against the perpetrator while questioning the institution’s transformation project.
