Eastern Cape Liquor Board accepts sentencing of Enyobeni Tavern owners because it’s in line with law

The Eastern Cape Liquor Board says while the sentence handed down to the owners of Enyobeni Tavern may seem lenient, it’s in line with the province’s liquor act.

Siyakhangela and Vuyokazi Ndevu have been each given a R5,000 fine or a 100-day prison sentence for selling alcohol to minors.

The couple appeared in the Eastern Cape Magistrates Court earlier on Friday, after 21 underaged children died at the establishment in 2022.

The liquor board said it hopes that this will serve as an example to other tavern owners in the country to refrain from selling alcohol to under-aged children.

“While we would’ve hoped for a tougher sentence, we accept the sentence as it is in line with the provisions of the Eastern Cape Liquor Act,” said spokesperson Mgwebi Msiya.
