After it was announced on Monday that Ronaldinho’s son had signed a six-year contract with a top Brazilian club, it has now been revealed that he hid his identity right up until he put pen to paper on the deal!
Joao Mendes, 14, was officially snapped up by Cruzeiro this week, but new information has come to light about how things played out at his trial.
While many players have chosen to use the names of famous family members to perhaps get easier access to opportunities, but Ronaldinho’s son did the exact opposite, deciding that if he is to make it through his trial successfully, it would be on merit alone.
Being the son of someone who is considered among the all-time greats may also come with intense expectation, something Mendes might have been all too aware of before going on trial at Cruzeiro.
As revealed in a statement released by the Brazilian club, Ronaldinho’s son only made it known who his father is after signing his professional contract.
“Although he was the son of Ronaldinho, Mendes performed a test in the club without the knowledge of kinship,” Cruzeiro’s director of grassroots football Amarildo Ribeiro said, according to BBC Sport.
“With his own talent, the young attacker was approved and only when he was already in the club, was eventually revealed the name of the famous father.
“He is a player that has a good physical size, a high technical quality. He is a player who can play both as an area player and as a second striker. He is a player who, even with the big size, has speed and finishes very well.”
