DJ Zinhle Celebrates AFRIMA award Nomination

DJ Zinhle started the week with some incredible news: the hitmaker has just been nominated at the 6th annual All African Music Awards and will be facing off against some of the continent’s most talented DJs.

We’ve never needed reminding that DJ Zinhle is one of the most talented artists of her generation but a bit of recognition is always welcome! Just 9 months after being named the best female DJ in Africa, the woman from Dannhauser has set her sights on continental dominance once again after scooping a nomination at the All African Music Awards (AFRIMAs). This year’s ceremony, the 6th since the awards were first introduced, will be taking place in November giving nominees a two and a half month period in which to campaign for votes before going toe to toe between the 20th and 23rd of November.

While many would have expected DJ Zinhle to secure a nomination in any of the female-led categories, it was both refreshing and exciting to find her among the 9 DJs who will be vying for the “African DJ of the Year” crown.

The announcement was made on social media on Monday morning:

Zinhle appeared to be both surprised and extremely thrilled once the news broke:

This nomination was no small feat either. DJing is still one of the areas of entertainment where women are criminally underrepresented (A big point that DJ Le Soul raised back when we interviewed her). One follower summed it up best when he wrote

“So proud of you Zinhle, in such a Male-dominated industry you have shattered the glass ceiling and redefined the stereotype that women also can do this. You are an inspiration. Congratulations”

Let’s hope that this is just the first step of many in the world of African DJing – we’re particularly excited for the day when there are 4 or 5 (out of 9) nominees in this same category. When that day arrives, we will look back to the 26th of August 2019 as the day that DJ Zinhle opened up the lane.

Congratulations mama kaKairo!
