Ramaphosa slams DA over disingenuous letter to the US

President Cyril Ramaphosa has hit out at the Democratic Alliance (DA) for calling on the United States (US) to intervene in South Africa’s upcoming general elections.

The official opposition wrote to the US government, pleading for additional resources to help bolster the deployment of election observers when South Africa goes to the polls in May.

The DA’s letter, addressed to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken this past week, has since sparked outrage from political parties.

They believe the calls are tantamount to interference in domestic affairs.

Speaking on the sidelines of the ANC’s door-to-door campaign in Ekurhuleni on Sunday, Ramaphosa labelled the move as a cheap tactic from the DA.

“We think it’s quite disingenuous. There seems to be another agenda that underpins that.”

The letter has raised the ire of the ANC, with the party saying the opposition is interfering in South Africa’s sovereignty.
