Free bus services for elderly and disabled in Johannesburg

City councilors in Johannesburg have unanimously supported free bus transport for the aged and people with disabilities during off-peak times.

The Speaker in the Johannesburg council, Vasco da Gama, said on Monday that the motion, tabled last week, had received overwhelming support.

Cope councilor Devanand Maharaj, who tabled the motion, believed that enhancing the mobility of pensioners and persons with disabilities would improve their access to basic services and economic opportunities, as well as their well-being, Da Gama said.

Member of the mayoral committee responsible for transport Nonhlanhla Makhuba recommended the council make a budget available for the free rides.

She also recommended that the pilot project is launched in the 2018/19 financial year.

“The results of the pilot project‚ along with the lessons derived from it‚ are to be brought back to council for information purposes‚,” Da Gama said in his official statement.
