Department of Justice fined R5m by Information Regulator

The logo of the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development. The Information Regulator has slapped the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development with a R5-million administrative fine.

The penalty follows the department’s failure to comply with an enforcement notice issued by the Regulator earlier this year. The enforcement notice was issued after the department contravened various sections of the Protection of Personal Information Act.

According to the Information Regulator, the department was required to submit proof that it had renewed its Trend antivirus, SIEM license and Intrusion Detection System license.

It also required the department to take disciplinary action against the officials who failed to renew the licenses. If the department fails to comply with this penalty, the regulator can impose a fine of R10-million and have the implicated officials imprisoned.
