Mourners at Cork Trust near Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga had to run for their lives on Sunday, 8 August. This after they spotted a big black mamba snake on one of the trees at the graveyard.
They had to wait for the Bushbuckridge Municipality Fire and Rescue Services to come to their aid.
Shocked mourner, Nicholus Ntusi, told the publication villagers were singing and waiting to bury an elderly person when the village headman shouted there was a snake on top of a tree.
“Everyone ran and the deceased was left alone. I quickly contacted Cockroach Mdhluli from Bushbuckridge Municipality because I had witnessed him catch a snake in the community.
“Funeral proceedings were paused for about an hour while we waited for Cockroach to arrive with his colleagues. We’re glad he came to our rescue,” said Nicholus.
Cockroach said the snake was about 2.5 metre long.
He said it might have heard the noise by mourners and tried to move when they spotted it.
“The graveyard has a lot of trees and some old graves are open. The snake might have found a home and was eating the worms from the decomposing bodies.
“I urge resident not to provoke the snake, but let it go. If they injure it, it will bite everything it comes across including their goats and cows,” said Cockroach.
