Helen Zille: Women who topped DA’s candidate list did it on merit

Democratic Alliance (DA) federal council chairperson Helen Zille said women who topped the party’s candidate list for parliament did so on merit, not a gender quota.
The party’s top 30 candidates include 14 women to represent the party in the National Assembly following national and provincial elections.
Speaking at the unveiling of its candidate list on Monday Zille said this proves that women are more than capable of being public representatives.
“Women that go through the process did so on their own merits and passed through every stage of the process and got ranked very highly. We don’t do quotas for women; we never have, and we never will. So, we have women applying, competing, and winning.”
