KZN training over 10 000 community workers to tackle COVID-19 testing

The Kwazulu-Natal government said they are improving their efforts to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

Premier Sihle Zikalala said labs in the province have ramped up their testing capacity to improve the turnaround time for test results.

He said people have been recruited to screen and test patients for the virus.

The province now has a total of 225 cases of COVID-19 and six related deaths.

Zikalala said 10,400 community care workers are being trained to conduct COVID-19 home-tests.

“All of these foot soldiers will be working closely with the mobile solution from National Health Laboratory Service, which will help us achieve quicker diagnosis”.

The premier said to ensure the safety of patients within communities, community health-care workers will be easily identifiable.

“They will be wearing marked clothing and [have] identification documents; this will make it hard from criminal elements to misrepresent themselves and terrorize our communities.”

On Saturday, Zikalala is expected to launch the home-testing programme in Umlazi – one of the first townships to be hit by the virus in the country.
