Health Minister Zweli Mkhize says South Africa has excellent local capacity to provide the steroid drug dexamethasone to COVID-19 patients. Researchers have found the drug helps cut the risk of death for patients on ventilators by a third.
The breakthrough finding was made in the UK earlier this week. Dexamethasone is not recommended for asymptomatic patients or those who don’t require oxygen.
The government says South African health care workers are familiar with the drug, having used it for decades as a registered medicine. South Africa is one of the manufacturers and suppliers of the drug.
