Those who have illegally enriched themselves during the COVID-19 crisis will not enjoy their spoils, regardless of who they are or to whom they may be connected, President Cyril Ramaphosa promised in his weekly newsletter.

He said the government won’t allow public funds or donations to vanish down a black hole of corruption. The president said corruption during a national disaster is a particularly heinous crime.

He said perpetrators will be dealt with decisively and harshly.

Ramaphosa said a lot of work has gone into strengthening and rebuilding vital institutions like the National Prosecuting Authority, the SA Revenue Service, the Hawks and the Special Investigations Unit.

But, he conceded, for those law enforcement agencies to succeed requires not only better laws and stronger enforcement but also political will and social mobilisation.
