Colleen Makhubele, the Chair of Chairs in the City of Johannesburg, has been suspended by her party, Cope.
The party’s Gauteng Interim Provincial Committee says her suspension is with immediate effect pending the outcome of a disciplinary hearing.
Makhubele is suspended from all council duties and activities.
She may not represent Cope on any platform, including media interviews.
Makhubele attempted to convene a council meeting earlier this month, referring to herself as Acting Speaker.
A court ruled the move unlawful and invalid.
It followed a successful motion of no confidence in the previous speaker, Vasco da Gama.
