
City Power is calling on law enforcement agencies to assist in their fight against illegal connections.
The Johannesburg power utility says illegal connections are rife in the city and after every disconnection the residents simply reconnect themselves.
City Power says there’s very little they can do against those who break the city’s by-laws. City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said: “Across the City of Johannesburg the issue of illegal connection is huge.
“We’ve got about 231 to 235 informal settlements across the City of Johannesburg and most of those have not been basically connected with services from the city. So it means that they are stealing electricity from the City of Johannesburg.
“And as you rightfully point it out, this has actually not only cost us money as the city but it has actually led to fatalities where children playing around and touched those bare wires and got electrocuted.
“Even the area where we did the cut off, the Power park area, there have been an electrocution in that area, there have been instances where our guys were shot at by the community from that informal settlement when they were responding to some of the complains from the formalised housing
