SA announces chicken imports tariffs

Government has finally announced the import tariffs on chicken portions. Deputy Finance Minister David Masondo has approved a 62% tariff on bone-in chicken and a 42% tariff on boneless portions.
The tariffs are part of a poultry master plan which contain measures to curb the flood of chicken imports to South Africa.
Local chicken producers argue that imports have plunged the industry into crisis and cost thousands of jobs. The country’s poultry industry had called for an 82% tariff on both bone-in and boneless chicken.
The South African Poultry Association has welcomed the tariff increases and dismisses claims that consumers will now face higher chicken prices.
