Oncology services resume at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital

The Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Joburg has partially reopened and oncology services have resumed.

But it’s still not ready to receive other patients, including those suffering from COVID-19.

A fire in April led to its closure for several weeks, putting pressure on an already strained healthcare system.

Management says the first day has gone smoothly.

“We have called through 13 patients in total to restart today,” said Dr Duvern Ramiah, head of Radiation Oncology.

“We are going to reassess them and we are going to try and get their radiation plans restarted.”

The emergency unit is still not operational and patients have been advised that they will only be seen by appointment for now.
