Challenges facing the Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana

Income support grants and the public sector wage bill are two of the big spending pressures facing Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana as he delivers his Medium Term Budget on Thursday.

The South African Federation of Trade Unions is calling for a R1,500 monthly grant.

Godongwna has been gifted with a higher than expected tax revenue collection mainly due to the stellar performance in the mining sector

But he has public sector unions on his back.

They aren’t thrilled to be at the centre of expenditure cuts and are equally upset by Godongwana’s utterances to parliament that Treasury pencilled in no wage increases for next year.
