The job of the police is to investigate crimes, and that is what they did in the case of Thabo Bester. Police Minister Bheki Cele has defended the police’s handling of the case.
MPs have criticised the police for not alerting Bester’s victims or the public of his escape. But Cele maintains that due processes were followed.
“We are not making news, we are investigating. It is important, then, now and forever to say the police, they investigate and they put those people out of circulation. To say you’ll announce that to be careful, people they say now Cele is mad,” he said.
Bester is now in the central maximum section of the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre where he will be watched 24 hours a day. Nandipha Magudumana has been remanded in custody in Bloemfontein.
