Photos: Robbers escape with boxes of money after cash-in-transit heist in Hazyview, Mpumalanga – residents loot left overs

A gang of robbers is still at large with an undisclosed amount of cash after robbing a G4S truck in Mahushu outside Hazyview, Mpumalanga, on Friday, 18 June.

Shocked bystanders had to run for dear life as the gunmen, driving a white Ford Ranger, silver Ford Ranger and silver BMW, hailed bullets with high-calibre rifles.

This forced the cash vehicle off the R538 while on its way to Hazyview.

The bystanders then saw a white Mercedes-Benz ramming into the bakkie escorting the cash van, resulting in both vehicles catching fire.

The gang outnumbered the three guards and allegedly riddled the truck with bullets, quickly surrounding it. They then forced them out before bombing the truck open with explosives. They continued to allegedly loot the cash before fleeing the scene with boxes of money.

The scenario turned into a lucky day for residents and motorists who were seen helping themselves to the scattered money left behind.

Colonel Brenda Muridili said police responded to a cash-in-transit robbery that took place near Louis Supermarket in Mahushu.

“A white Mercedes-Benz allegedly rammed into a bakkie that was escorting the cash van, forcing it off the road. Both vehicles caught fire. Not far from this scene, a cash vehicle was shot at until it came to a standstill. Suspects gained entry into the armoured vehicle and then fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money. Security officers were treated for minor injuries,” said Muridili.

No arrests had been made and police appealed to anyone with information to call Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or send tip-offs on MySAPS App.
