Cape Town school’s governing body says it has plan in place to curb violence

The J.G. Meiring High School’s governing body said it had a plan in place to help curb incidents of violence involving pupils.

Parents protested outside the Goodwood school on Tuesday following the stabbing of a grade 11 pupil in front of the school’s gates on Monday afternoon.

The concerned group said such attacks were not uncommon and there had been several fights and other incidents of violence involving pupils at the school recently.

Parents and pupils have accused the school principal and the provincial education department of failing to take action while children’s lives were in danger.

SGB chairperson, Ravell Roberts, has urged available parents to meet at the school on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the forming of groups of people who will conduct visible patrols in the mornings and afternoons to ensure pupil safety and curb fights.

“We would want to stand side by side with parents because these are our kids at the end of the day. If the parents come on board as a key stakeholder and support us in the afternoons to be visible and patrol, join hands with us in the afternoons, in the mornings, and let’s do what we can.”
