IEC says motive for leaking of candidate lists is still unknown

As an investigation continues into how both the African National Congress (ANC) and the MK parties candidates lists were leaked, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said the motive remains unclear.

Earlier on Tuesday the commission fired an employee believed to have leaked the documents using internal resources.

The two documents went viral on social media, shortly after they were submitted to the IEC.

The commission said it will not tolerate any conduct that undermines its integrity.

Deputy IEC CEO Masego Sheburi said, “Out of abundance of caution, we are also looking into all of us that have to those rights so that we can make sure that was the only work station that downloaded or distributed in an unauthorised manner, that list.”
