Permanent position based in Germiston with extensive travelling into Africa

1.1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE

The Africa Business Development Manager reports to the Business Development Director and is responsible for the determination and achievement of both short and long-term strategic business development objectives of the Company in conjunction with the Company Directors and Executives in accordance with the overall Group Strategy and to ensure that the planned business growth is achieved by directing and managing business development activities in an effective and efficient manner outside of South Africa. This is a management level position.

1.2 RESPONSIBLITIES

The list of responsibilities below is not intended to be exhaustive. Other tasks or duties may be assigned from time to time that are within the capabilities of the job incumbent.

1.2.1 Plan, direct and manage business development activities to ensure the effective achievement of the functional objectives.

1.2.2 Develop, review and report on the business development strategy to ensure that the strategic objectives are fully understood and executed by the other members of the management team.

1.2.3 Contribute to the development and refinement of the company vision and strategy and ensure alignment with the overall Group ambitions.

1.2.4 Support the overall process of management and corporate decision making to ensure that the company maximises it’s short, medium and long–term profitability and shareholder returns.

1.2.5 Develop and set clear objectives in order to maximise individual performance levels.

1.2.6 Establish and maintain a detailed market analysis relating to the current services being provided by the company, both in South Africa and other selected Southern African countries including market volumes and competitor activities. Extend this analysis where required to include data on targeted additional service areas and prepare business proposals for entry either through acquisition or by generic growth.

1.2.7 Develop and manage an annual budget for Business Development activities and ensure that expenditure is carried out in accordance with company policy and complies fully with ethical corporate governance guidelines.

1.2.8 Develop a detailed Marketing Strategy and Plan.

1.2.9 Establish and maintain excellent relationships with existing and selected potential new Clients.

1.2.11 Provide input into LEAN implementation and the establishment of best practices within the group.

1.2.12 To comply at all times with the duties of a manager and to ensure that all duties and responsibilities under common law as well as fiduciary and statutory duties are discharged in a satisfactory manner with the aim of maintaining the good Corporate Governance of the company.

1.2.13 To be familiar with and comply at all times with the requirements of the company’s Policies and Procedures with in particular the requirements of the Code of Business Conduct.

1.2.14 To assist the various operations in the different countries as required.

1.3 ORGANISATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

1.3.1 Honesty and integrity are critical to the position and the ability of management to trust the job incumbent is essential.

1.3.2 The ability to meet deadlines is critical to the success of this function and the job incumbent must be prepared to work extended hours where necessary to ensure these are achieved.

1.3.3 Complete confidentiality is an obvious requirement of this position.

1.3.4 The position requires a high level of analytical skill together with the ability to “think out of the box” and identify areas and concepts that could place the company in an advantageous position.

2 JOB DESCRIPTION

2.1 EDUCATION AND TRAINING

2.1.1 This position requires extensive relevant experience in a Senior Business Development function within a Contracting or Project Management company preferably in the Mechanical, Civil or Structural field with exposure to large capital projects and/or substantial long term facility maintenance operations with Africa experience.

2.1.2 It is envisaged that candidates will be in possession of a relevant marketing diploma or certificate and preferable a further Business qualification. Consideration will however be given to candidates with lessor formal qualifications with extensive practical industry and Africa experience at a senior level who can demonstrate previous successes in a similar position.

2.1.3 The position requires the individual to have a higher than average level of computer skills with the emphasis being on MS Word, Excel, Access and Power Point.

2.2 PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

2.2.1 The individual will be required to have excellent communication (both verbal and non-verbal) skills and a professional attitude and outlook and be able to communicate effectively with the other members of the Management Team, Group Management and senior Client personnel.

2.2.2 The position requires that the incumbent has a high level of self-motivation and is able to apply themselves diligently and methodically so as to complete tasks accurately within the timelines set.

2.2.3 The individual must be a peoples’ person and be able to conduct discussions and negotiations with internal and external stakeholders at various levels.

2.2.4 The individual will be required to exercise the necessary level of assertiveness and have a high level of presentation skills

2.2.5 The individual should be ambitious and be prepared to use this position for further advancement within the company or Group.

2.2.6. The individual must have good business development experience in African countries starting from feasibility studies, finding the right local partners, registration of a business and assist with the kick of the business in a country.

2.3 WORK BASE

2.3.1 The company is based in Johannesburg and operates throughout Southern Africa. The Business Development Manager will be located in Johannesburg but must be willing to travel and spend the required amount of time in various other locations throughout Southern Africa as required to carry out the duties associated with this position. Some international travel may also be required.
