Video: Dozens evacuated as bus catches fire in Joburg

Dozens were evacuated from a burning bus in Roodepoort, Johannesburg on Tuesday, with authorities still trying to establish the cause of the blaze.

Joburg EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi told the publication that emergency services were called to the scene, where they helped with evacuation efforts. He said no serious injuries were reported.

“The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined,” Mulaudzi added.

It is understood the bus was on the corner of Hendrik Potgieter and Winnie Mandela Drive at just after 7 am when it caught fire.

The driver told the publication he was travelling during rush hour when he realized the vehicle was on fire.

He said passengers were evacuated, as emergency services rushed to the scene.

Comprehensive investigation underway

Putco said it was looking into what caused the blaze.

“Putco is aware of an incident that occurred on Tuesday morning at Constantia, 14th Avenue. One of our buses caught fire, but all passengers and the driver were able to evacuate safely without any injuries. The fire department is currently on the scene and has contained the situation.

“Putco is working closely with the authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the fire. The safety of our passengers is a top priority, and we will take all the necessary measures to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future”.
