The discovery of a burnt Mini Cooper with human remains inside has left residents of Kgabalatsane in shock, as police in the North West Province continue investigations into what is now being treated as a triple murder case.
The disturbing incident unfolded on Tuesday, 3 February 2026, after a local man made the gruesome discovery while chopping wood in a bushy area near the village.
Burnt Mini Cooper Discovered in Bushes
According to information provided to police, the man noticed a severely burnt Mini Cooper hidden among trees. When he approached the vehicle, he saw what appeared to be human bones inside the car. Realising the seriousness of the situation, he immediately contacted the police and alerted members of the local community.
Police quickly secured the scene, while forensic teams were called in to examine the vehicle and collect evidence. The extent of the fire damage made it impossible to immediately identify the remains found inside the burnt car.
Police Await DNA Results
North West police spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh confirmed that investigators are currently awaiting DNA and forensic results to establish both the identity of the human remains and the ownership of the burnt Mini Cooper.
She explained that the fire destroyed many identifying features of the vehicle, making scientific testing the only reliable way to confirm who the remains belong to. Until then, police have urged the public to remain patient and avoid speculation.
Missing Family Linked to Burnt Mini Cooper
The case is believed to be linked to a missing persons report opened at Hebron Police Station days earlier. A father reported his 33-year-old daughter, her seven-year-old daughter, and the woman’s 39-year-old boyfriend missing after they failed to return home on Sunday, 1 February 2026.
Police confirmed that the three were last seen travelling in the boyfriend’s Mini Cooper, raising serious concerns that the missing family may be connected to the burnt Mini Cooper discovered in Kgabalatsane.
Triple Murder Case Opened
Colonel Myburgh stated that police have opened a case of three counts of murder, pending the outcome of DNA confirmation. At this stage, no arrests have been made, and investigators are continuing to follow all possible leads.
Detectives are working to reconstruct the final movements of the missing individuals, while forensic specialists focus on identifying the remains and determining how the fire started.
