Liam Lindsay brought down Matej Vydra before Wood – a 74th-minute replacement for Sam Vokes – scored low to Adam Davies’ right at Turf Moor. Chris Wood scored a stoppage-time penalty as Burnley beat Barnsley to reach the FA Cup fourth round.
Premier League Burnley had a first-half penalty overturned by the video assistant referee (VAR) for offside. Moments later, Cameron McGeehan’s header for League One Barnsley was ruled out for offside.

Burnley, who made eight changes to the side that beat Huddersfield in the Premier League on Wednesday, had gone 64 games without being awarded a penalty before referee Simon Hooper pointed to the spot twice on Saturday.
The impressive Vydra won both, although he was unable to take the first after a VAR review revealed he was just offside when he received the ball from Steven Defour.
Burnley appeared to criticise the decision in a half-time tweet, but later apologised and said it was intended as a “light-hearted comment”. Burnley enjoyed a resurgence in the second half,when they registered seven shots at goal – and they were finally rewarded when Lindsay lunged at Vydra near the byeline.
Although promotion-chasing Barnsley enjoyed more possession against a side two divisions above them, they did not produce a shot on target. Wood has now scored four goals in the third round for four different teams – West Brom, Brighton, Leicester and Burnley.

‘We’ve pieced together a side’ – what they said
Burnley manager Sean Dyche said: “We’ve pieced together a side and I’m pleased because that was a good Barnsley side. “I felt we had enough to win the game and did enough to win the game, especially at the end of a big, important week for us.
“I’m a big advocate of VAR but the referee needs to hold the ball. I know they want to be right, but they do need to speed it up and those things will get ironed out. “The referee allowed the set-up for a penalty and I know we are learning about it, but the referee should grab the ball and walk outside the penalty area, so there are no implications.
“Matej had got to the point of his run-up before the referee blew his whistle and said ‘no’. “That delay was what annoyed me – not the outcome – because once you know that is right you quickly move on.”
