South African billionaire businessman Patrice Motsepe is suing Botswana newspaper, Sunday Standard, for defamation.
The paper claims in an article that Motsepe smuggled R22-million to help politician Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi oust President Mokgweetsi Masisi as leader of the Botswana Democratic Party.
Motsepe has since rubbished the claims.
“We do not want to get involved and have no interests in the politics of Botswana or the developments of any political party,” Motsepe’s African Rainbow Minerals said in a statement on his behalf.
The paper also reported a meeting between Motsepe and former Botswana president Ian Khama.
Motsepe says it was simply a courtesy meeting at OR Tambo airport as their respective families have been friends for years.
