Bongani Bongo’s claims are wild and nonsensical: Pravin Gordhan

Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan has slammed accusations levelled against him by ANC MP Bongani Bongo as wild and nonsensical. Gordhan responded to Bongo’s allegations that he is behind his arrest.

Bongo has become the first casualty of Parliament’s Eskom Inquiry. He appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on a corruption charge, related to bribery claims, and was released on R5,000 bail.

A year since Parliament’s report on state capture at the power utility was finalised, no-one else has faced criminal charges. The Hawks says Bongo tried to offer Ntuthuzela Vanara a blank cheque to derail parliament’s inquiry into Eskom. He always denied the claims. The former state security minister claims Gordhan is also the mastermind behind an alleged attempt at poisoning him.

Gordhan’s spokesperson Sam Mkokeli says Bongo is hallucinating and needs to get a good lawyer. The minister finds the whole statement ridiculous and foolish,” said Mkokeli. Mr. Bongo must be hallucinating and the minister feels Mr. Bongo must look in the mirror and see exactly what it is he has done.

“His statement is nonsensical and he needs to get a lawyer to help prepare a dignified defense … because the statement has no basis, it is just a wild and crazy allegation. Bongo’s future as the chair of Parliament’s home affairs committee now also hangs in the balance.
