Blade Nzimande to give update on state of readiness of higher education sector

Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande is set to give an update on Tuesday afternoon on the state of readiness for institutions of higher learning following the release of matric results.

Last Friday, the class of 2023 made history by recording the highest pass rate percentage since the dawn of democracy.

The focus is now on universities, as successful candidates are now transitioning to the higher education sector.

Minister Nzimande will meet with members of the media on Tuesday afternoon to outline exactly where institutions of higher learning stand at this crucial point.

Several universities have cited, among other issues, that they have received applications that far exceed the number of spaces available to prospective students.

Nzimande will also address matters related to NSFAS-funded students, as many have lodged complaints of not receiving their funds while the clock ticks for registrations.

The minister’s briefing also comes on the back of recent allegations that he received kickbacks from NSFAS service providers in order to secure tenders, allegations that he has vehemently denied, saying they form part of a smear campaign against him.
