Organised crime plays a hand in looting, says Bheki Cele

Police Minister Bheki Cele says the riots aren’t just about looting malls.
He was in Mamelodi on Wednesday morning, surveying the damage left behind by criminals over the past 24 hours.
It’s been reported that 72 people have been killed in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal since last Friday.
Over 1,200 suspects are in handcuffs, some of whom are appearing in court on Wednesday morning.
“Looting is a smokescreen. It’s far beyond that, in terms of criminality happening,” Cele said.
“Chaiwelo Clinic that was almost under attack yesterday [Tuesday]… There are still those malls that are standing. We are trying to work hard that they remain standing.”
Cele said crimes against the state are being investigated by relevant law enforcement agencies.
