Taxi & truck crash near Bergville Interchange results in fatalities

A fatal crash between a minibus taxi and a truck has been reported near the Bergville Interchange.

While the number of those who were killed in the crash has not yet been confirmed, it was reported that emergency services were currently on the scene attending to multiple casualties.

Arrive Alive has confirmed that the southbound carriageway (towards Durban) is currently obstructed.

N3TC appeals to road users to approach the area with extra caution. “Please slow down, be vigilant and remain patient,” requests Thania Dhoogra, operations manager of N3 Toll Concession, the company managing the N3 Toll Route between Heidelberg in Gauteng and Cedara in KwaZulu-Natal.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident also involving a minibus taxi and a truck, seven people were killed in a horrific crash on the R37, Podungwane in Capricorn District yesterday afternoon (17 December 2022).

Those who died in the accident were all women, travelling in the minibus taxi. Two other people who sustained serious injuries were transported to a nearby health facility for medical attention.

Emergency workers at the scene said that the possible cause of the crash could have likely been reckless driving.

Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Florence Radzilani sent her condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to those who sustained injuries.

“To receive such news during festive holidays is heart-breaking. I can’t begin to imagine what the families of the deceased have to endure. May they find strength to get through this difficult time.

“We continue to plead with motorists to obey the rules of the road, for everyone to arrive alive at their respective destinations,” she said.
