SA COVID-19: 1 100 more beds for Gauteng

People should not panic as more beds are being made available for coronavirus patients.

That’s the reassurance from Health Department director-general, Sandile Buthelezi.

He says the health sector is better prepared for further hospital admissions during the third wave.

Buthelezi says the Nasrec field hospital in Johannesburg was closed because it was not being used and became too expensive.

“We want to assure the public that what has been done in Gauteng, we’ve been able to repurpose a number of beds,” Buthelezi said.

“They’ve been able to increase their beds by 1,100 to ensure that they don’t run out of beds.”
