Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga gives clarity on readiness to reopen schools

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga is expected to brief the nation on Monday morning. Motshekga was set to address the country on the department’s readiness to reopen schools on Sunday, but the briefing was postponed. Previously she announced that Grade 7 and 12 pupils will start on Monday. Government, however, made an eleventh-hour about-turn on the reopening of schools.

It said the Grade 7s and matrics will only return to school on 8 June. Some teachers unions, students and pupils associations say schools are not ready to accept pupils. Schools have been closed for two months. Coronavirus Hotline Number: 0800 029 999 from 8 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday.
