Basetsana Kumalo reflects on abusive first boyfriend
Former Miss SA and media mogul Basetsana Kumalo’s memoir is a no-holds-barred read, which gives people an intimate glimpse into her trials and tribulations. Bassie’s book, Bassie: My Journey of Hope was officially launched on 10 October.
During a video interview with Sapa, the star said she had always known she would write a book especially after she won Miss SA in 1994.
“Wow. I was always going to write a book, I’ve always known that when I came into public life in 1994. Simply because I understood the hour at which I was crowned. The moment that South Africa was going through,” she said.
Bassie also spoke about how people who don’t know her would be shocked to learn that she’s a stat of gender-based violence.
That my first boyfriend beat me up and the last straw was when he drew a gun at my face. And for me, it was important to be honest and speak about that because of the time we live in. She added that it was important for her to use her voice because many women are dying in relationships.
