Barcelona beats Getafe 2-0

La Liga champions Barcelona finished their season at Camp Nou with a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Arturo Vidal and Djené Dakonam (own goal). In the first game since the embarrassment at Anfield, Barça weren’t exciting or promising, and the win means nothing with the title already won. This wasn’t a good afternoon at all.

FIRST HALF

Barça started the game with more possession but zero creativity, and Getafe were really good at getting the ball back and counter attacking, and Jorge Molina suddenly became one of the most dangerous strikers in the world. The Getafe captain had three clear chances in front of goal, missed two of them, and scored a goal that was disallowed for offside.

Meanwhile, Barça continued to pass the ball without creating anything, and they really struggled in the final third. Their first shot on target came in the 36th minute on a weak Ivan Rakitic attempt from outside the box, but three minutes later they got a goal: Messi took a free-kick, Piqué’s header was saved, and Vidal scored the rebound.

At halftime Barça had 75% possession and the lead, but they were barely the better team on the pitch and Getafe deserved at least one goal, so the game was far from over ahead of the second half.

SECOND HALF

Barça looked better to start the second half, controlling Getafe’s counter attacks well and being more dangerous with the ball. The visitors weren’t as comfortable at the back, and their efforts to stop the Blaugrana became more and more last-ditch and desperate. There were no real chances that forced David Soria to make a big save, however, and as time went on Barça looked less and less intense and just seemed to settle for the one-goal win.

That became abundantly clear when Nélson Semedo replaced Malcom with 10 minutes to go, with Ernesto Valverde looking to secure a hard-fought 1-0 when his team is already champions. Getafe started attacking and looking for an equalizer, which they almost got on a Molina header that hit the post, while Barça just hoped Messi would score the second and kill the game. And that happened, kind of: Sergi Roberto found the captain inside the box, Dakonam tried to clear the ball and scored an own goal.

And this is how the season at Camp Nou ended: a boring performance from a boring team with a 2-0 win via a set piece and an own goal. Vintage Valverde.
