Declan Rice produced a decisive second-half double as Arsenal survived a tense afternoon on the south coast to beat Bournemouth 3–2 and move six points clear at the top of the Premier League table. Despite being tested repeatedly by an energetic home side, Mikel Arteta’s men showed resilience and quality at crucial moments to claim a vital away victory in the title race.
Rice, who had been a major doubt before kick-off after missing the previous win over Aston Villa with a swollen knee, proved to be the difference-maker. The England international returned straight to the starting line-up and justified Arteta’s faith by scoring twice from close range in a match Arsenal nearly let slip.
The midfielder’s inclusion was far from guaranteed. Arteta later revealed the decision went down to the wire. “Until the last minute I asked him, ‘how are you feeling?’” the Arsenal manager said. “He said, ‘I’m in.’ And he showed that he was big time in.” Few could argue with that assessment after Rice’s commanding second-half display.
Arsenal Tested Early as Bournemouth Capitalise
Arsenal’s afternoon began in alarming fashion. Just 10 minutes in, Gabriel Magalhães made a costly error, playing a loose pass across his own goal that gifted Evanilson a simple tap-in. The Bournemouth forward needed no second invitation, calmly rolling the ball into an empty net to give the hosts an early lead.
It was the worst possible start for Arsenal, who looked rattled as Bournemouth pressed aggressively and disrupted their rhythm. Andoni Iraola’s side, who famously did the double over the Gunners last season, played with confidence and belief, sensing vulnerability in the league leaders.
Justin Kluivert came close to doubling Bournemouth’s advantage, forcing Arsenal into desperate defending. The visitors struggled to build momentum, and former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson later described it as “one of the worst first halves I’ve seen Arsenal have.”

However, just as the pressure mounted, Arsenal found a way back. Six minutes after falling behind, Gabriel redeemed himself by finishing from close range following a brilliant mazy run by Noni Madueke. The equaliser steadied Arsenal but did little to ease concerns about their overall performance before the break.
Bournemouth continued to cause problems, pressing high and attacking with pace until half-time, where Arteta was forced into delivering another stern and tactical team talk.
Arsenal Find Control Through Rice and Odegaard
The second half told a different story. Arsenal emerged with greater composure, sharper passing, and improved defensive structure. The turning point arrived nine minutes after the restart when captain Martin Ødegaard threaded a clever pass to Declan Rice on the edge of the box. Rice made no mistake, crashing the ball home to put Arsenal 2–1 ahead.
The goal lifted Arsenal’s confidence, allowing them to dictate the tempo and pin Bournemouth deeper into their own half. Rice, growing stronger by the minute, dominated midfield duels and made intelligent late runs into the box.
His second goal came later in the half, once again from inside the penalty area, as Arsenal punished Bournemouth’s defensive lapses. At 3–1, it appeared the visitors had done enough to secure the points.
Yet, the drama was not over. Bournemouth pulled a goal back late on, setting up a nervy finish that tested Arsenal’s title credentials. Despite the late scare, Arteta’s side held firm, seeing out the match with just enough control and experience.
While far from a flawless performance, this was a win that underlined Arsenal’s growing maturity. Previous versions of this team may have folded under similar pressure, particularly away from home against a side with recent psychological advantage.
Instead, Arsenal relied on leaders like Rice and Ødegaard to turn a difficult match in their favour. The victory extends their lead at the top of the Premier League table and sends a message to title rivals that Arsenal can win even when not at their best.
With key players returning and momentum building, Arteta will be encouraged by the character shown. For Declan Rice, it was a performance that encapsulated his importance to this Arsenal side — fitness doubts, pressure moments, and all — and one that could prove pivotal as the title race intensifies.
