Former Mauritus President Sir Anerood Jugnauth has died

One of Mauritus’ most respected politicians and former prime minister and president, Sir Anerood Jugnauth, has died at the age of 91, the state broadcaster has announced.

There were no further details about the cause of death but it is known that he had been ill for some time.

He was first elected to the archipelago’s Legislative Council under British rule in 1963.

He rose to become the country’s second prime minister in 1982 going on to serve for 18 years, from 1982 to 1995, 2000 to 2003 and 2014 to 2016.

He also served two terms as president, a largely ceremonial position, between 2003 and 2012.

He was at times a controversial figure but his death will be mourned across Mauritius as he was like a father figure to many.
