The African National Congress (ANC) in the Western Cape was forced to postpone the opening day of its long-awaited provincial conference due to registration delays and issues around accommodation for delegates.
The party was supposed to open its ninth Provincial Conference on Friday, with secretary general Fikile Mbalula giving the keynote address.
He instead took to the stage on Saturday.
The party was still trying to register delegates from some of its biggest regions late into Friday night, with party leaders forced to postpone proceedings as a result of the delays.
Interim provincial committee convenor Lerumo Kalako said there were also some challenges around the accommodation of delegates.
“We are going now to postpone opening and open tomorrow early in the morning at nine o’clock all of us because we must sort this out. There are veterans who don’t have a place to sleep.”
Saturday’s programme had to be adjusted to include the official opening and the tabling of the organizational and financial reports, as well as what was on the agenda for the day.
This is the Western Cape ANC’s first elective conference after almost eight years since branches last elected a leadership.
The troubled provincial ANC is expected to choose between member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL) Cameron Dugmore, former member of Parliament (MP) Lerumo Kalako, and ANC MP Richard Dyantyi as its chairperson.
Former head of the Hawks, Anwa Dramat, is regarded as the frontrunner to be the next provincial secretary.
The party will also discuss a number of issues affecting the party from renewal and the 2024 elections.
