African National Congress (ANC) councillors who were appointed to hold portfolios in the Ekurhuleni Mayoral Committee did not pitch, once again, to be sworn in as Members of the Mayoral Committee (MMC’s).
At a swearing-in ceremony in Germiston on Wednesday afternoon, Mayor Sivuyile Ngodwana and council Speaker Nthabiseng Tshivhenga announced the postponement of the inauguration.
Last week, ANC members did not pitch to the ceremony and only Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) councillors were sworn into the committee.
Earlier in April, Ngodwana appointed five ANC councillors and five from the EFF to take up positions in his mayoral committee.
Ekurhuleni council chief whip Jongizizwe Dlabathi said negotiations within higher structures of the ANC were still in place, that’s why the swearing-in ceremony was postponed.
“On our part as an institution, we were certainly ready to proceed with the process today [Wednesday]. Some of the decisions are influenced politically.”
He said there were no internal disputes within the mayoral committee.
“There is no crisis but when pertinent issues are material, we can’t just move. We ought to respect the political parties.”
This means half of the city’s mayoral committee hasn’t been signed into office – which could affect service delivery.
