#AlexShutdown on hold

Residents of Alexandra township north of Johannesburg have halted their planned march to Sandton which was scheduled for Thursday morning.

Residents say they will regroup and apply for a permit to march.

The township was brought to a standstill on Wednesday.

Residents say they are tired of lawlessness, poor service delivery and the increasing number of informal structures in the area.

They also accuse authorities of doing nothing.

Sandile Mavundla, who is the Alexandra shutdown campaigner, says they have sent a memorandum to the City of Johannesburg over their concerns in February.

“We told officials when the people were building homes illegally and they did nothing,“ Mavundla said.

The Human Rights Commission is now probing possible violations by provincial and City of Johannesburg officials.
