Alexandra protest inquiry set to start Monday

The South African Human Rights Commission will on Monday be hearing oral submissions from Alexandra residents involved in recent protests.

The commission is investigating the possible violation of basic human rights.

It’s also looking at allegations of maladministration and improper conduct concerning the Alexandra Renewal Project.

President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed an inter-governmental forum, following last month’s protests over a lack of service delivery in the township.

Residents staged a total shutdown, demanding services and a meeting with Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba.

The Alexandra Renewal Project was meant to address urbanisation and housing challenges.
