33 Undocumented Children Intercepted at Beitbridge Border, Two Arrested

33 undocumented children intercepted at the Beitbridge Border Post have been placed in the care of the Department of Social Development following a suspected case of child trafficking or illegal cross-border movement.
The Border Management Authority (BMA) said the minors, aged between four and 15 years, were found travelling in a vehicle from South Africa to Zimbabwe on Tuesday. The children were undocumented and were not accompanied by legal guardians with the required travel authorisation.
BMA spokesperson Mmemme Mogotsi confirmed that two foreign nationals were arrested in connection with the incident.
“The two suspects were arrested for facilitating the illegal movement of the children across the border,” Mogotsi said.
She added that authorities acted swiftly to protect the minors.
“All 33 minor children were immediately handed over to the Department of Social Development for further processing, in line with child protection protocols and South Africa’s domestic and international obligations to safeguard vulnerable persons,” said Mogotsi.
The Department of Social Development will conduct assessments to establish the children’s identities, family backgrounds, and whether they may be victims of human trafficking or exploitation. Officials will also work with law-enforcement agencies and international partners to trace parents or legal guardians and ensure the children’s safety.
The BMA has reiterated its commitment to strengthening border controls and preventing crimes involving vulnerable groups, particularly children. The arrests form part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal migration, child trafficking, and cross-border crime at one of the busiest ports of entry in southern Africa.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the case are continuing, and the suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
