DERTIG, North West – What began as a joyful celebration ended in tragedy on Saturday afternoon, 3 January 2026, when a lightning strike disrupted the annual Mphebatho Troop Festival in Dertig.
Thousands of attendees had gathered at the sports ground to witness the traditional dances and drilling displays that mark the festival each year. However, the celebrations were abruptly cut short when severe weather struck, turning the festive atmosphere into one of shock and grief.
Two people were declared dead after being struck by lightning, while more than 50 others sustained injuries and were taken to Mathisbestad Clinic and Jubilee Hospital in Hammanskraal for medical treatment. The identities of the deceased have not yet been released, as the municipality is still communicating with their families.
The Mphebatho Troop Festival is an annual event aimed at uniting community members, cultural groups, and local leaders in a celebration of music, unity, and social cohesion. It also serves as a platform to showcase local talent and promote cultural pride and positive community engagement.

Moretele Municipality spokesperson and EMS representative, Mothupi Malebye, confirmed the incident.
“Masango George would like to provide an update on the incident that occurred during the Mphebatho Troop Festival on 03 January 2026 at Dertig Sports Ground, next to Mphebatho Library,” said Malebye.
“Due to severe weather conditions, more than 10 people were struck by lightning. Unfortunately, two people were declared dead. Emergency services responded swiftly, and all other injured individuals received medical attention.”
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as investigations into the incident proceed.
